ZRO is the governance token of the LayerZero protocol. It is used to vote in immutable onchain referendums held every six months on activating or deactivating the protocol's fee switch, which determines whether LayerZero charges fees on cross-chain messages. If the fee switch is activated, collected revenue is used to buy back and burn ZRO tokens, creating a deflationary mechanism that ties token scarcity directly to protocol usage.
