MKR is the governance token of the Maker Protocol. It is used to vote on protocol parameters such as stability fees, collateral types, and other critical changes, with voting power proportional to the amount of MKR held. The token also serves as a recapitalization resource, allowing the system to mint and auction new MKR to cover shortfalls when the protocol becomes undercollateralized.
