It is used as collateral in lending markets, for liquidity provision in decentralized exchanges, and as a bridge asset for cross-chain transfers across multiple blockchains. The token maintains 1:1 backing with Bitcoin through a custodial model where merchants deposit BTC with BitGo to mint WBTC, with all reserves verifiable on-chain through transparent proof-of-reserve mechanisms.
