US CFTC Investigates Polymarket Again Over Possible Violation of 2022 Settlement Agreement

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is once again investigating whether Polymarket violated the settlement agreement reached in 2022, focusing on whether it has taken sufficient measures to prevent U.S. users from accessing its overseas main platform.

This review is part of a broader investigation launched by the CFTC earlier this year, involving Polymarket's user geolocation identification mechanisms, advertising campaigns in the U.S. market, and the customer account opening process and protection measures of its U.S. platform.

Under the 2022 settlement agreement, Polymarket agreed to stop providing services to U.S. users. In 2024, the CFTC and the U.S. Department of Justice separately launched related investigations, which concluded in 2025 without bringing charges. Since then, Polymarket has gradually re-entered the U.S. market by acquiring licensed derivatives exchanges.

Polymarket previously stated that it has strengthened geographic restrictions, prohibiting users from bypassing access restrictions through VPNs and other means, and has established related monitoring mechanisms. There is currently no indication that the CFTC has filed formal charges in connection with this investigation. (Reuters)
