YC CEO Garry Tan: Spends $100,000 to $200,000 Annually on AI Agent Tokens

On November 3, according to TechCrunch, Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan revealed on Walter Isaacson's podcast The Builders that he spends approximately $100,000 to $200,000 annually on AI agent tokens.

Tan stated that his AI agent has accessed all of his emails, Dropbox files, and Apple Notes, including psychotherapy notes from 20 years ago. He also publicly released a toolkit called gstack on GitHub containing 23 Claude Code skills. YC also utilizes an AI agent named Stray Light internally, which holds context on all YC-funded founders, email correspondence, and application materials.

Tan believes that costs must decrease for personal AI agents to reach the mainstream, describing his own spending as "a privilege not everyone can afford." He also envisions a future where personal AI agents are controlled and programmed directly by users, rather than being dominated by large tech companies.
