OpenAI Reportedly Plans to Purchase Google AI Chips to Reduce Reliance on Nvidia

on October 28, according to The Information, sources familiar with the matter revealed that OpenAI plans to purchase Google's artificial intelligence chips to accelerate efforts to reduce reliance on Nvidia. If OpenAI decides to procure Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), it would represent a significant victory for Google's chip business. It remains unclear what the financial terms and other details of the planned chip procurement will be. OpenAI is currently recruiting an engineer to "lead the optimization" of its most advanced frontier models to enable them to run on TPUs.

Last year, The Information reported that OpenAI had begun using Google TPUs to reduce its reliance on Nvidia chips. This news prompted Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang to take swift action, leading to a new agreement between Nvidia and OpenAI. A spokesperson for OpenAI later stated that the company "does not currently have dedicated plans to use TPUs." OpenAI's job postings indicate that work on optimizing models for TPUs is still in the early stages.
