Canada and NVIDIA Participate in Cohere Financing, Valuation Exceeds $20 Billion

on October 29, Canadian AI model startup Cohere is conducting a large-scale financing round, reaching a valuation of $20.5 billion, roughly tripling from a year ago. On Thursday, Cohere announced the completion of the first closing of this round, with total expected funding reaching up to $5 billion. The company confirmed securing investment commitments from investors including the Canadian government and Nvidia, alongside a previously disclosed $600 million investment from European retail giant Schwarz Group. Specifically, the Canadian government has agreed to invest up to $1.14 billion in Cohere.

Canadian Prime Minister Carney stated that Cohere plans to continue operating its headquarters in Canada and expects to build new computing infrastructure in the country by 2030, with an investment of approximately $1.2 billion. If successfully completed, this round would become the largest private financing deal in Canadian history, far surpassing previous records. Cohere declined to disclose how much of the $5 billion funding target has been finalized, but its Chief Financial Officer noted that the first closing already covers "the majority of it." This valuation excludes the funds raised in this financing round.
