The FATF has launched a special review on anti-money laundering for cryptocurrencies, with the first batch of results to be announced in June 2027

According to Cointelegraph, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) announced that it will launch a special anti-money laundering review for jurisdictions with significant cryptocurrency activities to address gaps in the implementation of global anti-money laundering standards by various countries.

FATF stated that the review will primarily focus on jurisdictions where virtual asset service provider activities are of "substantial importance," and will consider the existing assessment status of these jurisdictions. The agency noted that regular assessments and follow-up procedures will remain the main tools for evaluating compliance.

The review timeline indicates that preliminary conclusions will be published in June 2027, with more results to be released in October 2027. FATF also mentioned that following the review, there will be accompanying monitoring and faster reporting mechanisms to track the progress of jurisdictions in rectifying deficiencies. FATF did not disclose the names of the jurisdictions being reviewed, nor did it specify the number of jurisdictions included in the review.

This review continues the issues revealed in the FATF report from July of this year. The report showed that among the jurisdictions surveyed, 83% have legislated travel rules, but enforcement gaps remain significant: of the 91 jurisdictions that have established travel rules, 55 have yet to take supervisory or enforcement actions regarding compliance. Regulatory agencies also face challenges in identifying unlicensed cryptocurrency businesses and regulating overseas providers serving local customers. The travel rules require cryptocurrency service providers to share information about the sender and receiver of transfers.
