The New York Times and Other Publishers Sue Brave, Accusing It of Scraping Content for AI Use

According to TechFlow, on November 3, The Verge reported that The New York Times and other publishers filed a lawsuit against the developer of the Brave browser, alleging that it scraped content without authorization for AI use and allowed users to bypass publishers' paywalls.

In their complaint, operators of the New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, and Orlando Sentinel alleged that Brave monetizes by providing paid access to scrape web indexes for AI companies, with the related content used to train models or respond to user queries. The complaint further alleges that Brave supplied copyrighted content to multiple AI companies, including Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral, xAI, and Cohere.

A spokesperson for The New York Times stated that the newspaper has repeatedly requested Brave to halt the infringing conduct. At the time of publication, Brave did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
