Samsung Electronics plans to fully exit the 8-inch wafer foundry business by the end of 2030, shifting to 12-inch advanced processes.
TechFlow reported on Nov. 2 that, according to South Korean semiconductor media outlet The Elec, Samsung Electronics has decided to fully cease 8-inch wafer foundry production by the end of 2030 and has already informed customers of the related plans. This is the first time Samsung has clarified the final exit date for this business, with the company planning to concentrate personnel and equipment investments on 12-inch advanced wafer processes.
Since the beginning of this year, Samsung Electronics has stopped accepting new orders for 8-inch wafer foundry products, involving mature processes from 65 to 180 nanometers, which are mainly used for display driver chips, power management ICs, and image sensors. The report noted that domestic South Korean foundries like DB HiTek and SK Keyfoundry are facing tight capacity, while existing customers face challenges such as order transfers, product re-validation, and increased production costs.
