Original Title: Crypto Must Survive Before It Wins: Vitalik Buterin on Ethereum's future, India's role and more
Broadcast Date: November 4, 2026
Key Takeaways
Breaking Fast & Mumbai Gathering: Vitalik just completed a 76-hour deep fast and attended Devcon 8 and the Cypherpunk Congress in Mumbai, expressing satisfaction that the geek conference has expanded from narrow technology privacy to a broader field connecting global human rights and real-world concerns.
Lean Ethereum: The core upgrade trajectory for Ethereum's new decade is streamlining and refining, relying on two main pillars: full-stack ZKification (ZK for everything) and AI-driven formal verification, achieving an extremely lightweight underlying logic and mathematically flawless protocol.
Countering AI Cryptographic Raids: Concerned that AI might break traditional encryption algorithms before quantum computing matures, Ethereum L1 firmly adheres to a highly conservative strategy. Core consensus is fully anchored to attack-resistant hash-based cryptography. Enterprises only need to anchor hashes and validity proofs on-chain to achieve ironclad security.
India's Web3 Paradigm Shift: India possesses the world's most vibrant and hungry pool of young developers. The ecosystem is shifting from early-stage high-frequency speculation and pure DeFi trading toward integrating national Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), Aadhaar identity, and Proof of Personhood applications.
Reaffirming the Ethereum Foundation's Position: The Foundation upholds decentralized servant principles, never acting as a commanding ecological hegemon. Ethereum's adoption and growth roadmap in India is entirely entrusted to local Indian builders, with the Foundation focusing solely on delivering foundational code and open-source funding.
Fully Entering "Bunker Mode": While smart contract vulnerabilities have decreased significantly, frontend hijacking, private key leaks, and centralized infiltration occur frequently. All major exchanges and custodians must retreat defenses into bunkers, physically isolating key assets while assuming all external systems operate in a hostile environment.
Stern Warning on Hacker Fund Flows: If institutions fail to prevent funds from flowing to North Korea due to defensive lapses, they will face the most devastating crackdowns from the global regulatory system. Security is the industry's prerequisite for survival; defense baselines must never be compromised under the guise of operational agility.
Legal Engineering Redefining RWA & DeFi: Real-world assets are drastically compressing single-custodian trust risks through cross-jurisdictional consortium structures and on-chain rights confirmation litigation mechanisms, creating a new financial paradigm that combines permissionless self-custody freedom with risk control comparable to traditional banking.
Reflecting on U.S. Regulatory Misalignment: Deeply criticizing the absurd reverse elimination caused by past securities enforcement: teams that diligently planned roadmaps and honestly made business commitments were penalized heavily, while speculators issuing hollow Meme coins exploited loopholes. Regulatory first principles should constrain externalized social risks, not stifle responsible entrepreneurial innovation.
Key Highlights
On Lean Ethereum and the AI Leap: "The core of Lean Ethereum is to fully ZKify everything and leverage AI to advance full-stack formal verification. Rigorous mathematical verification that once consumed a team's efforts for years is now accelerating exponentially with powerful AI assistance."
On Extreme Conservative Cryptography: "Facing potential breaches from AI and quantum computing, Ethereum L1 has chosen the most robust path of restraint. The core consensus is strictly limited to the most conservative classical hash-based cryptography. For most institutions, you don't need to move all data on-chain; simply anchoring hashes and proofs to Ethereum provides indestructible security."
On Ecological Power and Self-Driven Evolution: "The Ethereum Foundation's creed is resolutely not to act as an ecological dominator. The roadmap for Ethereum's implementation in India belongs forever and entirely to the people of India."
On the Bunker Survival Rules for Crypto Exchanges: "Every rigorous institution must now thoroughly understand what 'Bunker Mode' means for them. If your defenses collapse and funds flow to North Korea, a regulatory storm will be catastrophic. You must seal your core assets in the safest, most conservative foundation, even at the cost of speed."
On Restoring the Fundamental Logic of Regulatory Philosophy: "The most basic common-sense logic of regulation should be: if your actions impose genuine external risks on others, regulation should strictly constrain you; if you only explore and bear the risks yourself, regulation should let you fly freely. The previous regulatory misalignment that forced teams away from making commitments and instead toward Meme coins is a painful lesson the entire industry must learn from."
Main Interview
1. Breaking a 76-Hour Fast & Mumbai Impressions: From Geek Tech Privacy to Global Real-World Concerns
Debangana Ghosh: Vitalik, thank you so much for accepting an exclusive interview with Moneycontrol at Devcon 8 in Mumbai. I'd like to start by asking about your recent experience. How have your days in India been? Also, you had originally planned a 72-hour fast—did you successfully complete it?
Vitalik Buterin: Thank you. Yes, I ultimately lasted a full 76 hours before officially breaking my fast, and I'm feeling great now. This trip to India has been unforgettable. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many passionate peers at Devcon and attending the Cypherpunk Congress the day before the main event.
The conference left a deep impression on me. It has evolved beyond merely discussing Ethereum's architecture or narrow cryptographic privacy, truly building a bridge between developers focused on encryption technology and activists concerned with non-technical privacy, human rights protection, and various real-world social issues. Bringing together people from different countries and backgrounds was an excellent learning opportunity for me as well.
Of course, this also served as a crucial reunion for the global Ethereum core developer family. We conducted a series of high-intensity underground technical discussions, comprehensively mapping out the roadmap's evolution in response to new paradigms like the rise of AI and quantum computing threats. Seeing the Ethereum community maintain such tight cohesion and forward-looking thinking after a decade of trials and tribulations truly feels amazing.
2. Lean Ethereum: Two Technological Pillars for Ethereum's New Decade
Debangana Ghosh: The past year marked Ethereum's official crossing of the first-decade milestone. Looking ahead to the next ten years, what does Ethereum's evolution blueprint look like? I've noticed you've been speaking frequently about the concept of "Lean Ethereum". Could you systematically break it down for us?
Vitalik Buterin: Correct. Lean Ethereum is a comprehensive systemic underlying architecture upgrade that Ethereum is vigorously advancing over the next few years. To summarize its core logic in one sentence, it is about completely eliminating historical redundancy and streamlining the entire Ethereum protocol layer to an ultra-efficient modern state.
This strategy relies on two absolutely critical core pillars:
The first is "full-stack Zero-Knowledge proofification (ZK for everything)". We are systematically embedding Zero-Knowledge proof technologies like ZK-SNARKs into every capillary of L1 consensus, state verification, and L2 scaling. This means network nodes no longer need to mechanically re-execute massive volumes of historical transaction computations. Instead, they only require second-level validation of lightweight mathematical validity proofs, fundamentally resolving the centralization problem caused by full node bloat.
The second is "leveraging AI to advance full-stack formal verification (AI & Formal Verification for everything)". Formal verification has always been the ultimate holy grail in computer science for guaranteeing zero-defect code. However, writing strict mathematical proofs for the entire Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and core consensus traditionally required top mathematicians and engineers to dedicate years, even decades, to the effort.
Thanks to the exponential breakthrough in modern AI code comprehension and reasoning capabilities, we can now generate and derive formal verification proofs at tens of times the speed. It is precisely thanks to this powerful lever provided by AI that we can rapidly advance radical underlying upgrades while absolutely ensuring, at a mathematical level, that every line of code written into the protocol is flawless.
3. Countering AI Computing Raids: L1 Sticks to Conservative Hashing, No Need to Move All Data On-Chain
Debangana Ghosh: Yesterday, your core researcher Justin Drake delivered an extremely sharp warning during his talk: AI is evolving faster than imagined, potentially cracking existing asymmetric encryption systems with super-strong algorithms before quantum computing even matures. Faced with this imminent potential threat, how do you envision the defensive depth for next-generation L1 and L2 architectures?
Vitalik Buterin: In response to this potential threat, Ethereum adopts an extremely rigorous and conservative underlying defense philosophy. We have made a highly decisive choice at the core consensus layer: the fundamental security of the Ethereum blockchain itself will rely solely on the most conservative, time-tested classical hash-based cryptography.
The mathematical construction of hash functions is highly unique. Regardless of facing future quantum algorithms or AI-driven heuristic attacks, the defense barrier against hash collisions remains exceptionally robust. As long as core consensus and state proofs are anchored in classical hashing, the very foundation of the blockchain will never be easily shaken.
As for the upper-layer commercial and enterprise applications you mentioned, such as supply chain data, medical records, or precision manufacturing logs managed by traditional institutions on their current servers, the practical solution is actually quite elegant: enterprises simply do not need, nor should they, directly move massive volumes of plaintext data on-chain.
You only need to maintain business logic in local databases and submit data hashes along with Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZK Proofs) certifying their compliance and validity to Ethereum L1. This way, enterprises fully inherit Ethereum's immutable decentralized credit endorsement while avoiding the risk of off-chain data being exposed to AI brute-force decryption. This is precisely where the next-generation layered architecture exerts its greatest power.
4. India's Web3 Paradigm Shift: Moving Beyond Pure Speculation, Integrating DPI and Proof of Personhood
Debangana Ghosh: Welcome back to India. From your early observations to now, how do you view the evolution of India's developer ecosystem? What is the current size of the Ethereum community in India?
Vitalik Buterin: One of India's most striking characteristics is its immensely large and vigorous youth demographic. There are countless young engineers here with an intense hunger and desire to change their destinies through code, a raw drive that has become rare in many mature economies.
A more profound shift lies in the application paradigms developers are building. For a long time, most people equated Web3 strictly with DeFi, and frankly, a significant portion of early DeFi was essentially nothing more than highly speculative hedging trades and liquidity games.
But in India today, we are delighted to see more and more teams shifting toward solving deep-rooted real-world problems. The most prominent directions are Proof of Personhood protocols, and figuring out how to organically integrate the Ethereum protocol with India's globally renowned Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and Aadhaar identity systems.
In an era flooded with AI deepfakes, India's exploration of how to prove "I am a real, independent person" on-chain via Zero-Knowledge privacy protection, while simultaneously catalyzing micro-inclusive finance and authentic prediction markets, places it at the forefront globally.
5. Reaffirming the Foundation's Position: Adoption Roadmap Belongs Entirely Locally
Debangana Ghosh: Given India's massive market, does the Ethereum Foundation currently plan to establish a full-time team or physical office here? In your planning, how significant do you consider the growth opportunities for Ethereum in the Indian market?
Vitalik Buterin: Since its founding, the Ethereum Foundation has upheld a very clear decentralized philosophy: we will never act as a commanding central operator or an aloof dominator.
Our responsibilities are highly restrained and clear: if local developers want to improve infrastructure security, strengthen user privacy protection, or push open-source tools to implementation, the Foundation will spare no effort in providing top-tier technical guidance, code reviews, and unbiased open-source research funding.
As for commercial expansion, local compliance, and product deployment, the Ethereum Foundation will absolutely not dictate a top-down dogmatic blueprint. In short: the roadmap for Ethereum's implementation and adoption in India must and will be entirely decided by the Indian people themselves. Only bottom-up evolution rooted in local, real pain points creates a truly viable decentralized network.
6. Frequent Exchange Breaches: Crypto Institutions Must Fully Enter "Bunker Mode"
Debangana Ghosh: Vitalik, last week's major cyberattacks targeting top centralized exchanges sounded another alarm for the industry. Even massive institutions with immense technical reserves still appear riddled with vulnerabilities against sophisticated cybercrime in the AI era. What are your recommendations regarding the current crypto security landscape?
Vitalik Buterin: Looking across the entire crypto security posture of the past eighteen months, we can see a very distinct watershed. The good news is that thanks to mature toolchains, audit mechanisms, and formal proofs, hacker thefts caused by pure smart contract logic vulnerabilities at the base level have plummeted. The bad news is that hackers' firepower has completely shifted toward frontend interfaces, centralized operations nodes, multi-signature private key holders, and complex social engineering infiltrations.
While hack attacks are commonplace, the industry is forming a clear consensus on a security core: mainstream institutions must immediately figure out what "Bunker Mode" means for them.
The so-called Bunker Mode means that all mainstream exchanges, large custodians, and financial institutions must operate under the worst-case scenario assumption: defaulting to the belief that all your frontend web pages, API endpoints, employee computers, and even cloud servers are already under strict surveillance and infiltration by hostile forces.
Under this cold assumption, your only way to survive is to freeze your most core customer assets in untouchable physical bunkers: implementing extremely stringent multi-signature governance, introducing lengthy and irrevocable on-chain timelocks, completely stripping away any single-point permissions, and locking core assets behind the hardest, most conservative architectures.
This is not just a technical choice; it is a political and economic red line concerning life and death. If an institution's defenses collapse due to complacency, leading stolen assets to eventually flow to North Korea, it will trigger the most devastating thunderous crackdowns from law enforcement and financial regulators worldwide. In the current macro environment, any institution that dares to trade security for so-called operational convenience and flexibility is essentially digging its own grave.
7. Legal Engineering Empowers RWA: Building Trust Between Centralized Reality and Censorship Resistance
Debangana Ghosh: With maturing infrastructure, how do you view the evolution of crypto application forms over the next two to three years? Can we truly achieve pure decentralization, or are compromises in the real world unavoidable?
Vitalik Buterin: Decentralization has never been a black-and-white religious dogma; it is a trust spectrum constructed jointly by engineering and law.
In the past 18 months, we have witnessed rapid expansion in Real-World Assets (RWA) and compliant stablecoin sectors. Admittedly, from the idealist perspective of native crypto geeks, as long as assets map to the real world, they inevitably face the objective realities of legal entities and off-chain reserves. It cannot achieve 100% pure decentralization.
But the thrilling breakthrough lies in the maturation of "Legal Engineering". Previously, users could only blindly bet on the moral standards of a single centralized issuer. Now, through multi-jurisdictional consortium architectures, the freezing or transfer of any asset requires unanimous consent from multiple sovereign jurisdiction courts or trustee institutions that are not subordinate to each other.
Furthermore, advanced projects are directly designing on-chain asset ownership into statutory claims with global legal enforceability. Once an issuer acts out of line, holders can directly submit the immutable on-chain smart contract records as ironclad evidence to courts for asset preservation.
Our ultimate goal is to allow users to require unconditional trust solely in Ethereum's on-chain settlement and objective oracles during daily experiences, compressing the radius of trust toward centralized entities to the absolute limit. To enable self-custody wallets to enjoy both permissionless absolute freedom and rock-solid security comparable to, or even surpassing, traditional banking systems.
8. Clearing Regulatory Fog: Harshly Penalizing Externalized Risks, Correcting Reverse Elimination of Builders
Debangana Ghosh: As the industry's scale grows, global regulatory steps are accelerating sharply, especially in mainstream jurisdictions like the US. How do you personally view the boundaries of crypto regulation? Is it possible for us to welcome a reasonable universal regulatory framework?
Vitalik Buterin: Seeking a unified global regulatory framework is inherently dangerous. Its flip side means a tiny elite of bureaucrats would forcibly impose their narrow will and values upon billions globally, ultimately extinguishing institutional competition and individual choice.
If we return to the first principles of regulation, I believe reasonable regulatory standards are actually extremely straightforward, and ought to be self-evident common sense: If your actions are imposing massive uncontrollable risks on society and others, regulation should strictly constrain you; if your actions are entirely closed-loop, bear all consequences yourself, and do not externalize systemic risks, regulation should let you explore freely.
Regrettably, reviewing regulatory practices over the past few years, particularly the rigid securities enforcement in certain jurisdictions, reality often veered into absurd reverse elimination:
If a startup team harbors technical ideals, publicly shares its technology roadmap step by step, and honestly commits to future product plans and governance rights to supporters, regulators end up wielding magnifying glasses to accuse them of issuing unregistered securities and impose heavy penalties; conversely, if someone openly declares on social networks, "We do nothing, make no promises, this is purely a Meme coin," they can brazenly exploit legal gray areas for speculative gains.
This reverse elimination forces teams genuinely working on real-world projects to fear making any serious commitments to their communities, ultimately pushing the entire ecosystem into a muddy quagmire of low-quality speculation devoid of consumer safeguards. The regulatory system must painfully rectify this misalignment. Only by aiming squarely at genuine external risks and protecting diligent technological pioneers can the crypto industry truly usher in responsible, long-term prosperity.
