TechFlow Summary: In a decentralized derivatives (Perp DEX) landscape dominated by leading platforms, Variational has charted an alternative course. Operating on Arbitrum through its Omni platform, it has leveraged a unique "zero trading fees + single market maker (OLP) quote-to-trade" model alongside traditional financial asset (TradFi) swaps to achieve explosive growth in both trading volume and open interest within just three months. Its open interest has surged to third place across all chains, while trading volume ranks fourth.

However, "free" is often the most expensive pricing in the business world. While traders save on apparent transaction commissions, they surrendered up to $26.8 million in spread profits to market makers and the protocol in Q3. Although 20% of this was allocated to the protocol treasury as a solid backing for future $VAR token buybacks, over half of the profit was absorbed by market-making hedging costs.

On the eve of its Q4 TGE and professional trading API delivery, a deep dive into its position turnover, spread revenue allocation, and token valuation logic offers extremely high reference value for understanding the liquidity landscape of the decentralized derivatives sector.

BTC rose 43% in Q3, yet the overall trading volume of on-chain perpetual contract platforms decreased by 2.5% compared to Q2. Variational's average daily trading volume bucked the trend, surging 80% in Q3, lifting its ranking among peer platforms from eighth to fourth. Half of its September trading volume came from a product that didn't even exist in August: swaps covering stock indices, gold, and crude oil.

Chart: Variational's 7-day on-chain perpetual contract trading volume market share surged from 4.6% on June 30 to 12.4% on September 30, successively surpassing edgeX, Aster, and Lighter. Leading platform Hyperliquid captured 38.6% of total Q3 trading volume, exceeding the chart's axis range.

Key Takeaways

Surged from eighth to fourth, ranking second late in September.Total on-chain perpetual contract platform trading volume reached $1.79 trillion in Q3. Variational captured 6.4%, a significant increase from 3.4% in Q2; and between September 17 and 30, its trading volume ranked only behind Hyperliquid.

Position size and trading volume advanced in tandem. Both trading volume and open interest (OI) grew by approximately 80% in Q3, with an average daily turnover of 1.67x per $1 of open position. Among top-ten platforms, none achieved synchronized growth of over 50% in both metrics.

Swaps contributed half of September's volume in their first month.Eight swap contracts accounted for 50.3% of total September volume, with Nasdaq 100 index swaps alone comprising 30.4%; the first batch of gold and Nasdaq 100 index swaps went live at the start of the month.

Traded toe-to-toe with trade.xyz in traditional financial markets. In the two weeks ending September 30, Variational's volume in stocks, indices, metals, and crude matched trade.xyz, despite its open interest representing only 17.6% of trade.xyz's.

Fifth of the spread allocated to the treasury before $VAR launch.Traders paid a total of $26.8 million in spreads in Q3, up 69% from Q2, pushing the protocol treasury to 9.58 million USDC by quarter-end.

On September 24, Variational announced the issuance of the $VAR token in Q4, with 32% of the supply allocated to point holders. Treasury revenue is planned to be entirely used for token buybacks.

Chart: Highlights changes in average daily trading volume and average open interest relative to Q2 for five platforms among the ten largest on-chain perpetual contract platforms ranked by Q3 volume. Variational achieved roughly 80% growth in both metrics. Hyperliquid saw OI grow 45.3% and volume grow 8.0% in Q3, while seven of the top ten platforms recorded lower volumes than in Q2.

Market Context: BTC Up 43%, OI Increases, but Volume Drops 2.5%

In Q3, crypto traders exhibited a "long positions, fewer trades" characteristic. BTC rose 42.6% for the quarter, driving on-chain perpetual platform OI up 69% to $14.2 billion, with Hyperliquid alone accounting for $3.5 billion of that increase.

However, trading volume across these platforms declined by 2.5% in Q3, falling to $1.79 trillion. July alone saw volume shrink by 21% compared to June.

The cost of maintaining long positions also increased significantly. The annualized funding rate for BTC on Hyperliquid averaged 8.9% in Q3, far above the 2.7% in Q2, despite the average implied volatility dropping from 41.8 to 37.3.

The Federal Reserve held rates steady on July 29, with three officials voting in favor of a hike; it subsequently implemented its first rate increase since 2023 on September 16.

Chart: Indices normalized to June 30 baseline (set to 100). BTC closed at 143 at the end of Q3, perpetual OI closed at 169, while the 30-day rolling perpetual volume dipped to 66 on August 16 before closing at 96.

Seven of the top ten trading platforms saw volume shrink in Q3. Most of Variational's growth came from non-crypto TradFi assets: its TradFi market volume surged by $41.9 billion compared to Q2, whereas crypto assets grew by only $9.5 billion.

The Nasdaq 100 hit an all-time high closing price on September 22, merely three weeks after Variational opened swaps on the underlying asset.

Volume & Open Interest: Both Growth ~80%, Turnover Stable at 1.67x Daily

Variational operates a perpetual contract and swap trading platform named Omni on Arbitrum. On Omni, a single market maker, the Omni Liquidity Provider (OLP), quotes prices for each underlying market and acts as the counterparty to all trades, charging zero trading fees to users.

In contrast, sector leader Hyperliquid utilizes an order book model to match traders and charges fees per executed trade.

Variational's Q3 volume reached $114.2 billion, up from $62.8 billion in Q2; its average OI climbed from $410 million to $741 million, closing the quarter at $1.01 billion.

Driven by the synchronous expansion of volume and position size, its daily turnover rate remained stable at 1.67x (1.68x in Q2), while Hyperliquid's turnover dropped from 1.60x to 1.19x as its position growth far outpaced volume growth.

Variational broke $20 billion in daily volume for the first time on August 25 (one week before swaps went live) and set a new record of $30 billion on September 21, with over half coming from swap contracts.

Chart: Daily trading volume, 7-day moving average, and one-sided open interest for four platforms from April 1 to September 30 (using independent Y-axes). Variational's OI grew from $573 million on June 30 to $1.01 billion on September 30.

While Hyperliquid and Lighter saw position sizes expand faster than their volume growth, Variational's trading volume and open interest progressed in lockstep.

Throughout Q3, despite monthly volume more than doubling, Variational consistently maintained its weekly points incentive pool at 150,000, and its OI still saw a net increase of $441 million during the quarter.

Market Share: Volume Ranks Fourth at 6.4%, OI Jumps to Third at 6.8%

Variational's volume market share climbed from 3.4% in Q2 to 6.4% in Q3, while its OI market share rose from 4.9% to 6.8%, allowing it to surpass peers in position size and rank third behind only Hyperliquid and Aster.

Hype liquid's Q3 OI market share reached 58.0%, with volume at 38.6%. Including the Robinhood Wallet channel, Lighter holds 7.6% volume and 5.1% OI; counting only its standalone app, those figures drop to 6.7% and 4.5% respectively.

Chart: Weekly volume and OI market share comparison from April to September 2026 (logarithmic scale). In the week ending September 27, Variational captured 12.6% of volume and 6.6% of OI; Hyperliquid held 35.4% and 58.6% respectively.

Variational secured dual market share gains in both volume and OI during the same period. In contrast, Hyperliquid primarily added position share, while Aster's shares remained largely flat.

As swaps fully took over its trading flow, Variational's volume market share surpassed its OI market share for the first time in the week ending September 13.

Swaps: Eight Underlyings Capture Half of September's Volume

Swap contracts track stock indices or commodities, with Variational pricing directly based on quotes from its TradFi liquidity partners. This product lacks the crypto-specific perpetual funding rate; positions only require paying or receiving financing costs anchored to benchmark rates like SOFR once daily at the 5:00 PM ET market close.

Market makers introduced their first TradFi hedging partners for the gold underlying as early as July 23, precisely five weeks before gold and the Nasdaq 100 officially launched as the first batch of swap contracts on September 1.

Chart: Breakdown of swap volume by category in September and share of total swap OI as of September 30. Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 index swaps combined accounted for 77% of total swap trading volume in September.

As of September 30, eight swap contracts were live, contributing $29.8 billion in volume in September, representing 50.3% of the platform's total volume. On September 2, Variational raised the OI cap for gold and Nasdaq 100 index swaps to $50 million, and hosted its inaugural swap trading competition from September 10 to 24, drawing over 2,500 registrants.

Gold contracts attracted disproportionate position capital: as of September 30, they accounted for a quarter of total swap OI, despite comprising only one-seventh of September's swap volume. Starting September 3, swap volume received double-weight calculation in the weekly points pool, pushing swap OI to $190 million by quarter-end.

trade.xyz, deployed on Hyperliquid, is the largest on-chain TradFi asset trading platform, yet its traditional market volume halved from July to September. In July, Variational's volume was $7.1 billion versus trade.xyz's $107.1 billion; by September, the gap narrowed sharply to $33.4 billion against $51.2 billion.

Among the combined on-chain TradFi volume of Variational, trade.xyz, and Aster, Variational's market share exploded from 6.1% in July to 32.9% in September, compared to 50.4% for trade.xyz and 16.7% for Aster during the same period.

Chart: 7-day rolling volume for the TradFi market. trade.xyz peaked at $35.1 billion in the week ending August 2; by the week ending September 30, Variational merged swap contracts with traditional perpetual contracts and matched it at $10.7 billion. Ostium's September volume fell short of $200 million.

Variational achieved this trading volume despite having a much smaller position size than its competitor: between September 17 and 30, its traditional asset OI averaged only 17.6% of trade.xyz's.

On October 8, following quarter-end, six intraday bid-ask snapshots showed that executing a round-trip $1 million trade on the Nasdaq 100 index cost just $88 in spread fees on Variational before rate adjustments, compared to $204 on trade.xyz's order book.

Chart: Pre-fee $1 million round-trip trading costs (in basis points), sourced from the median of six snapshots taken between 19:14 and 22:36 UTC on October 8. Variational offers tighter quotes on Nasdaq 100, S&P 500, gold, and Brent crude; trade.xyz dominates silver and WTI crude.

Fee structures further cement Variational's lead across these four underlyings: Variational charges zero fees, whereas trade.xyz levies a base taker fee of 1.8 bips round-trip on indices and up to 18 bips on gold.

Aster reduced its traditional market taker fees to 1.25 bips on September 7, six days after launching swaps.

Perpetual Contracts: OI Grew by $252 Million, Driven by Altcoins

Perpetual contracts still account for four-fifths of the platform's position exposure. Variational's average daily crypto trading volume grew 15% in Q3, compared to a mere 2% growth for Hyperliquid after excluding trade.xyz.

Crypto OI increased by $192 million, with two-thirds concentrated in tail tokens outside of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and HYPE.

Following Variational's milestone of listing 100 TradFi underlyings within 90 days by August 17, traditional asset perpetual positions grew by $60 million; however, as swaps absorbed index and commodity flows, traditional perpetual volume retreated from $7.1 billion in July to $3.6 billion in September.

Chart: Monthly breakdown of one-sided OI by sector from February to September. As of September 30: major cryptos $396 million, other cryptos $229 million, traditional perps $199 million, and swaps $190 million.

All business segments saw net growth in Q3. Swaps brought incremental positions atop the perpetual contract base rather than cannibalizing existing holdings internally.

Protocol Revenue: Traders Paid $26.8M in Spreads in Q3, Treasury Captures One-Fifth

Market maker core revenue derives from bid-ask spreads, with Variational allocating 20% of each trade's spread to the protocol treasury. The treasury thus booked $5.36 million in Q3, indicating traders paid a cumulative $26.8 million in spreads, surging 69% from Q2.

Chart: Distribution of the $26.8 million spread flows in Q3: market making costs 52.6%, market maker net profit 22.7%, protocol treasury 20.0%, and referral rebates 4.8%. Treasury flow data is based on actual on-chain transfers; other breakdowns are estimated based on six biweekly reports released by Variational from July 24 to October 2.

In terms of take rate per dollar traded, Variational's earnings slightly trail Hyperliquid: its blended spread equates to 2.35 bips of volume, versus Hyperliquid's average perpetual fee rate of 2.40 bips.

However, Variational's high daily position turnover of 1.67x (compared to Hyperliquid's 1.19x) allows its annualized revenue per $1 of open interest to surpass Hyperliquid.

Chart: Revenue extraction rate per $1 traded and per $1 average open interest in Q3. Annualized spreads paid by traders to Variational equal 14.3% of their total positions, whereas fees paid to Hyperliquid annualize to just 10.4% of total positions. Hyperliquid's fee stats exclude developer rebates.

The treasury's captured one-fifth of spreads equals 2.9% of annualized OI, whereas Hyperliquid's war chest extracts up to 9.2% of position funds for HYPE buybacks.

As swaps' share of total volume rose, the blended spread per dollar traded tightened from 2.81 bips in August to 2.09 bips in September, and further to 1.64 bips between October 1 and 14; however, boosted by a 99% month-over-month volume surge in September, total spreads generated that month still rose 48% MoM to $12.4 million.

Chart: Protocol treasury USDC balance changes from January 23 to September 30. Treasury balance climbed from 4.22 million USDC on June 30 to 9.58 million USDC on September 30, accelerating after swaps went live.

Between January 23 and October 14, the protocol treasury experienced zero outward transfers. Every executed trade triggers a micro-transfer of funds to the treasury in real-time, bringing the total treasury balance to 10.89 million USDC as of October 14.

Outlook: $VAR to Launch in Q4 Following Omni Public Beta and Trading API Release

On September 24, Variational announced the $VAR token launch slated for Q4 2026, delaying its original plan for a late Q3 release. The official explanation cited "major strategic partnerships reshaping Variational's development trajectory."

At the time of the token generation event, point holders will receive 32% of the total supply; teams and investors hold 50%, "locked for 12 months post-TGE with linear vesting over at least three years"; the foundation retains 18%.

Variational plans to direct all protocol treasury revenue toward buying back and burning $VAR tokens. Until the official token launch, weekly distribution of 150,000 points will continue.

Chart: $VAR token allocation announced by Variational on September 24: 32% to point holders unlocked at launch; 50% to team and investors; 18% to foundation reserves. Variational has not yet disclosed the total token supply.

Before the token launches, Variational plans to "conclude beta testing and push Omni to public mainnet, expand swap contract underlyings, release a professional trading API, and publish detailed information regarding $VAR token buybacks and utility functions."

The trading API represents its next core engineering effort; until its formal delivery, all trades must be executed manually via the official frontend application.

Chart: Delivered and published roadmap items from July 1 to December 31. Pre-token launch: Omni full public access, trading API release, and token buyback details publication. Items without confirmed dates: 7x24 hour continuous swap contracts.

Swap contract underlyings continue to expand: eight additional underlyings went live between October 1 and 14, covering cocoa, volatility indices, and even the Dow Jones Index, raising the total swap count to 16.

Variational also plans to introduce 7x24 hour continuous swap trading, thereby eliminating daily fixed settlement windows and supporting cross-margin modes.

On September 30, CEO Lucas Schuermann outlined "three future revenue streams": order flow fees, net interest income on open positions, and net interest income from USDC deposited on the platform.

Valuation Deduction: Targeting Peer Tokenized Revenue Multiples, $VAR Valuation Ranges from $2.6B to $5.1B

The treasury's captured one-fifth of spreads constitutes the substantive revenue Variational plans to allocate for token buybacks, scaling dynamically with trading volume and spread fees.

We modeled three typical growth scenarios: using Q3 average daily volume of $1.24 billion and a 2.35-bip spread, the treasury yields $21.3 million in annualized revenue; using September's average daily $1.97 billion and 2.09 bips, annualized revenue reaches $30.1 million; and using Oct 1-14's average daily $2.84 billion and 1.64 bips, annualized revenue hits $33.9 million.

Chart: Annualized treasury revenues under three different development scenarios, multiplied by respective peer protocols' Fully Diluted Valuations (FDVs) as of the September 30 close against their Q3 annualized trading revenue multiples flowing to tokens: Aster at 124x, Lighter at 134x, and Hyperliquid at 152x (counting only war chest trading fees, excluding reserve interest income). The derived FDV matrix falls within the $2.6 billion to $5.1 billion range.

Directly benchmarking against peer valuation multiples based on total trading fees would yield an estimate ranging from $8.7 billion to $23.5 billion based on gross spreads. However, these peer platforms redirect the vast majority of fees back to token holders: Hyperliquid injected 86% of fees into its war chest in Q3, Aster allocated 78%, and Lighter dedicated 61% to buybacks. Variational allocates only 20% of spreads to the token.

On September 30, Polymarket prediction market probabilities indicated a 62.5% chance of $VAR hitting a $1 billion market cap on its launch day, and a 29.6% chance of surpassing $2 billion.

Entering the final stretch of Q3, Variational ranks fourth in volume and third in OI, with position growth and trading scale advancing in lockstep, and matching trade.xyz's TradFi volume just one month after swapping contract launch.

Its treasury currently holds 10.89 million USDC in tangible revenue earmarked for token buybacks. Assuming a $1 billion valuation, solely relying on Q3's treasury accumulation pace could repurchase 2.1% of circulating $VAR tokens annually—a buyback yield vastly exceeding HYPE and LIT's 0.7%, as well as ASTER's 0.8% at its September 30 market cap.

Before the token officially debuts, the professional trading API will deploy first; Polymarket's odds suggest roughly a 70% probability that its launch valuation will fall below $2 billion, a level that sits even beneath the conservative lower bound derived from peer tokenized revenue multiples.
