Anthropic Spends $3.4 Billion on Natural Gas Power Generation Equipment to Power Data Centers

According to TechFlow, on November 8, the Financial Times reported that as AI labs intensify their involvement in the energy sector and bypass intermediaries in the race for scarce power equipment, Anthropic has finalized a massive deal for gas-fired generators. In late September, the cutting-edge AI lab secured a purchase commitment for 1.7 gigawatts of heavy-duty generators from San Antonio-based equipment supplier OnePWR Solutions for $3.4 billion.

Anthropic did not acquire OnePWR itself, but the transaction also includes the engineering and construction capabilities required to install the generators. According to a source familiar with the matter, no OnePWR employees were transferred to Anthropic. Another source stated that OnePWR had ordered generators from Caterpillar two years ago but required financing to complete the deal. Initially, Anthropic planned to become a customer of OnePWR, but later opted to take over its Caterpillar-ordered equipment. (Jin10)
