ARK Digital Asset Research Director: Crypto Market Loses Approximately 24 Basis Points of Market Cap to Hackers Annually

on November 3, according to a post by Lorenzo Valente, Head of Digital Asset Research at ARK Invest, since 2018, the average annual assets lost to hacker attacks in the crypto market have amounted to approximately 24 basis points of market capitalization.

He stated that the amount lost to fraud in the U.S. banking system is equivalent to 1.7 basis points of deposits, a difference of roughly 14 times between the two. Valente argues that hacker attacks represent a hidden cost for crypto trading and store-of-value functions, which will ultimately be borne by users and undermine the competitiveness of crypto networks.

An accompanying graphic shows that stolen crypto assets totaled approximately $8.5 billion year-to-date through October 30, 2026, equivalent to 0.33% of the average crypto market capitalization for that year, including $6.36 billion stolen from Binance.
